The iPhone 3G[s] + 3.0 OS Possibilities

Since the new iPhone 3.0 OS was just released yesterday and the new handset, the iPhone 3G[s], will be coming out tomorrow, there has yet to be a flurry (or any, for that matter) of apps that really take advantage of the more powerful features these two welcome updates provide. There are, however, a couple on the horizon that do a spectacular job.

Layar, Augmented Reality App In Development For iPhone

Described as the world’s first augmented reality browser, it combines information from the GPS, camera, and digital compass to add a layer of virtual reality on top of the real-life reality, hence the term “augmented reality”. Layar is actually pretty mind-blowing… the app itself, as well as the possibilities it paves for future apps.

Layar will be available for the G1 this month, but an iPhone 3G S release is in development.

TomTom for iPhone - turn-by-turn navigation for iPhone

According to TomTom;

“Turn-by-turn car navigation for iPhone is here

TomTom has made navigation available for your iPhone 3G. All you need is:

  • the TomTom app including the latest maps
    (coming soon to the iTunes App Store)
  • the TomTom car kit that offers secure docking, enhanced GPS performance, clear voice instructions and hands-free calling, while charging your iPhone at the same time.”

A release date has yet to be announced for the TomTom app but it is expected to become available within the next month or so.

These are just a couple of examples of what to expect to become available soon at an iTunes store near you. But, they are definite beauties!

Being the huge iPhone fan that I am, I’ll continue to follow and provide my thoughts on the iPhone… in addition to sharing what I believe will be the more exciting apps in development and/or available.
