Ditch my iPhone in favor of Google Voice? No way!

Late last night, when I got my 20% Battery Alert Notification on my iPhone 3G, I decided to check my day’s usage. I was taken aback to realize how well my iPhone’s battery actually holds up. I knew, in general terms, that it was holding up fairly close to how long my BlackBerry Pearl’s daily charge would last, since I try to keep the same daily regiment of charging… at night while sleeping. Some days I connect it to my Mac at some point to either sync or boost up my charge so I’m guaranteed to last through the night (wherever and however long that may take me). So, when I go a full day without a single charge I like to check the stats. I’m usually happily surprised. See for yourself:

Plus, thinking back on the day, I really did use the hell out of it… as I usually do. The days mobile digital activities that made up the 5+ hours of usage roughly broke down like this:

  • Calls - 45 min
  • Email - 45 min
  • Web Browsing/Google Reader - 1 hr
  • Watching Video’s - 20 min (via vSNAX)
  • Twitter - 1+ hr (via Twitterfon Pro)
  • Getting Things Done  - 50 min (OmniFocus - It’s what I wrote the majority of this and last night’s post on - as well as my daily GTD routine.)
  • Texting: 10-15 minutes
  • General iPhone browsing - remaining minutes

No too shabby. Considering that there is no other device that can compare will all of it’s benefits (as well as those wonderful bells and whistles)… that holds up this well, I can’t imagine replacing it. I don’t need no stinkin’ Google Voice… I love my iPhone!

I’ve been a huge fan, and supporter, of Google from the get go and I love my Google apps, but this is one I’ll take a pass on. The fact of the matter is, I don’t think I would even use the service. I like having my phone numbers separate… Work is work, home is home, and the cell is the cell. That’s how I like it. Anyone who needs to reach me knows the best way wherever I am. And if not, there’s voicemail… which I also like. Plus, there is now a plethora of other ways to get a hold of me. iphone-google-voiceI get a call on my iPhone just as quick as I get a text, email, Tweet, or Facebook message. I really don’t see why I would want to redirect all other calls from my home and office to that same number. Even if I had it programmed for specific times of the day… it still seems like it would be a bit overwhelming. That’s why I have separate numbers. Plus, there is always this other technology called call-forwarding if I really want my calls forwarded to any number. The other thing I don’t like is that it can’t utilize iPhone’s visual voicemail,  which I also love. Do you really want your voicemail transcribed, as yet another piece of email? Maybe it’s just me but, I also don’t want to have to rely on the internet, and my internet connection, for phone calls. But, then again, that’s just me. I can see how some people could want to utilize it, I’m just not so sure about the general public. Would you?
